EECS Professor Hui Jiang is part of team that wins AI Common Sense Reasoning competition.
Professor Hui Jiang’s research group at York, in collaboration with visiting student Quan Liu from University of Science and Technology in China, won the 2016 Winograd Schema Challenge in Common Sense Reasoning, http://commonsensereasoning.org/winograd.html. This challenge asks computers to make sense of sentences that are ambiguous, but which humans easily understand. Disambiguating Winograd Scheme sentences requires common-sense understanding. For example, in the sentence, “The city councilmen refused the demonstrators a permit because they feared violence,” it is logically unclear who the word “they” refers to, although humans have little trouble understanding because of the broader context. The competition was held at the International Conference on Artificial Intelligence (IJCAI) in New York City in July 2016.
