EECS partners with Shopify

From right Dean Hornsey, Andrea Ross, senior lead of computing education programs (Shopify), York President Lenton, Jean-Michel Lemieux, Senior Vice-President Engineering (Shopify), Alison Evans-Adnani (York BSc ’95), program lead, Toronto (Shopify), and eight students enrolled in the program.

A new partnership announced Sep. 24 that reflects the future of experiential learning brings an innovative model of education to York University this fall.

The unique program embeds students directly into development teams at Shopify through a paid internship that culminates with an honours bachelor of computer science (BSc Hons.) degree. Shopify also pays the students’ tuition for the full four-year program.

Beginning this fall, the first cohort includes eight York Lassonde Computer Science students who will split their time equally between Shopify’s downtown offices and their coursework at Lassonde. The students will work alongside industry mentors and gain critical skills to solve real problems with modern technology.

We have developed the Industry Partnership Program which was approved by Senate in the 2017-18 academic year which enables us to deliver true work integrated learning in conjunction with a committed industry partner such as Shopify and their Dev Degree model.
