2016 SPS Best Paper Award
Prof. Hui Jiang from Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, Lassonde School of Engineering and his former PhD student, Dr. Ossama Abdel-Hamid, have recently received the 2016 IEEE Signal Processing Society (SPS) Best Paper Award (https://signalprocessingsociety.org/get-involved/award-recipients) for a paper they published in 2014.
Ossama Abdel-Hamid, Abdel-rahman Mohamed, Hui Jiang, Li Deng, Gerald Penn and Dong Yu, for “Convolutional Neural Networks for Speech Recognition”, IEEE/ACM Transactions on Audio, Speech, and Language Processing, Volume 22, No. 10, October 2014.
Dr. Abdel-Hamid and Prof. Jiang have pioneered in applying convolutional neural networks to speech recognition. Their work has been widely cited in the research community during the past few years. This award-winning paper constitutes the main part of Dr. Abdel-Hamid’s dissertation, defended at York in September 2014. Dr. Abdel-Hamid is currently working as a research scientist in the Apple Siri group, USA.
The IEEE SPS Best Paper Award honors the author(s) of a technical paper of exceptional merit dealing with a subject related to the society’s technical scope, and published in the past 5-year time window in one of the society’s transactions or journals. This award is widely recognized as the most-valued paper award in the field of signal processing.
