Department seminar: Modern Power System Relaying Practices February 11th 12-1pm

February 11 @ 12:00 pm - 1:00 pm

Professor Ramakrishna Gokaraju

University of Saskatchewan

Modern Power System Relaying Practices

Date: Tuesday February 11th 12-1pm

Location: LAS 3033

Lunch bites will be provided.

Abstract:

The talk/lecture will discuss wide area measurement system (WAMS) based real-time stability prediction using actual phasor measurement units (PMUs) and real-time controlled islanding in power systems. It will discuss briefly methods for “when to island” using protection functions and “where to island” using graph theory analysis.

High speed relaying using traveling waves has gained significant attention of late in the industry. A high speed distance relay using FPGAs and IEC 61850 protocols (SV & GOOSE) for high voltage (HV) and extra high voltage (EHV) transmission lines would also be discussed. It can make a secure trip decision in 0.6~0.8 cycles. Fault location in low voltage dc systems (PV farms) using the analysis of the converter switching frequencies would also be discussed.

Speaker:

Ramakrishna (Rama) Gokaraju graduated with Distinction in Electrical and Electronics Engineering in April 1992 from the Regional Engineering College (National Institute of Technology), Trichy, India. He obtained M.Sc. and Ph.D. degrees in Electrical & Computer Engineering from the University of Calgary, Calgary, Canada in June 1996 and May 2000, respectively. He joined the Department of Electrical & Computer Engineering at the University of Saskatchewan as an Assistant Professor in 2003 and is currently a professor in the department.

During the period 1999-2002, he worked at the Alberta Research Council, Calgary, Canada as a Research Scientist and IBM Toronto Lab, Toronto, Canada as a Staff Software Engineer.

During his sabbatical leave (2009-2010 academic year), Dr. Gokaraju worked as a Visiting Professor in the Department of Electrical & Computer Engineering, University of Manitoba, Canada. During his sabbatical leave (Jan-June, 2014), he was a visiting professor with the University of Queensland, Brisbane, Australia. During  Jan-May 2018 he was a Visiting Professor in the Department of Electrical Engineering, Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur, India.

Dr. Gokaraju’s current areas of research are in Controlled Islanding, PMU based solutions for Transient Stability Protection, High Speed Relaying, and Modeling of New Generation Small Modular Reactors (Nuclear Power Plants) for power system studies. He has graduated 6 PhD students and about 25 Master’s students.  He is a registered professional engineer in the Province of Saskatchewan, Canada.
